Power Outage Affects 2nd Day of Classes
by Alison Law

On the second day of school, one would usually expect to go to class to hear more rules and policies, maybe get some homework, and chat with friends.
Not this year.  At about 9:50 am there was sudden darkness.  The power had gone out.   Almost immediately rumors began flying.  Some said it had to be terrorists.  Others said someone had just turned off the breaker in the hallway. Then teachers reported the power was out  on the entire Oregon coast.
Volleyball players worried about their upcoming game with Newport.  Later, there were rumors that the entire West Coast had lost power, though some said it was only cities south of Reedsport.
Everyone wondered about the cause of the power outage. The school went about its schedule as best it could for the rest of the morning.  At approximately 11:30 a.m. the lights popped back on to the relief of some, and the disappointment of others.
The real cause of this power outage was a downed power line.  A logger in the Coquille area had fallen a tree, which hit the power line.   Power was out only from Reedsport to Myrtle Point. The rest of Oregon and the West Coast were unaffected.
Crews were able to get things up and running in a relatively short amount of time.  This power outage ended up making the second day, which is usually routine, very unpredictable.
