Publications Ad Sales
by Chelsea Tibbles

Thursday, September 23rd, the Publications Class put on their business attire and a smile on their faces and set out to sell enough ads to pay for the expense of publishing a newspaper and yearbook. Prior to the big day, the class practiced their sales pitches. Some had to make their appeal directly to Mr. Beach, while others had to pass the test with other students in the class. On the big day, the class divided into six groups. Each group had at least one member who had sold ads the year before. Mr. Beach drove the white bus and dropped off groups from the northern end of Reedsport to the southern end of Winchester Bay. The students quickly discovered being a salesperson is really all not that easy. To the tune of "Not this year, sorry" to "Maybe if you call back in a week or so..." the students went from business to business. They learned how to stay positive even if the answer they wanted wasn't what they heard. They said their "please" and "thank you's" even when they were discouraged because they knew they were representing their class and their school. Amid the frustrations were those moments when the business person agreed to buy an ad. By the end of the five and a half hours of work, the class had sold $3,680 in ads. They reached their goal of surpassing last year's total. The really good news is that there are still more than 60 "call backs" to make in the upcoming weeks, so the total could go much higher. Although it was a long day, the publications class members were excited about their accomplishments and lessons they learned.
