Helping Our Schools: Measure 10-38
by Alison Law

The Reedsport School District, like many other districts around the state, has had major budget cuts.  As a result, many programs are being eliminated.  There have been some big changes in this district, such as the closing of W.F Jewett Middle school and the loss of the wrestling team.
In an effort to supply additional revenue, the school board has written a measure to raise more money.
Measure 10-38 is the proposed measure.  It will raise a total of $249,656 over three years.  It taxes the difference between the market value and assessed value of property.  For many residents, taxes will not be changed at all.
Citizens for Voting YES on Local Option have been hard at work promoting the measure.  A brochure is available, and many have received postcards depicting the importance of a measure.  The committee even went so far as making personal calls to many voters in the Reedsport area.
The measure, like all tax measures except those in even numbered years, requires a double majority. For a double majority, 50% of registered voters must vote, and then a 50% majority must vote yes.  Last year, the same measure did get enough ballots in, which was the worry, but it did not get the majority by 100 votes.
Some people have concerns about the measure.  Many think they will be paying higher taxes.  However, most homes will not pay a lot more, and many will not be paying any extra at all.
The measure appears in the current mail in ballot, which is due by November 4th.  It is the only item on the ballot.

Braves Make It to State
by Alison Law
Many sports have made it to state in the past few years.  Football, swimming, baseball, and golf all did.  This time it’s cross country's turn.
Three of Reedsport’s top runners placed well enough at districts to go on to state this weekend.  Juniors Tyler Hague and Andrew Merschel and Sophomore Kati Dickson are getting ready for the race.
Kati is excited.  Though she “P.R.'d” at districts, she hopes she can do a little better at state.  “There are some girls I wanted to beat, but I didn’t.  I’m gonna get them at state.”  Kati, a member of our newspaper staff, is a first year runner on cross country, but she has always liked running.
Andrew and Tyler have had a few more years.  Overall they were both pleased with their own runs at districts.  Future plans for them included winning districts as a team next year.
Tyler says his favorite part of cross country is the adrenaline he gets when he runs. “I love to compete and this sport allows me to do that,” he says.  For state, he plans to just run his race and remember his puka shells which he says, “have brought me luck so far.”
To get ready for state meet, Andrew will take practice easy this week.  Although he ran well at districts, he wished he’d had more beef jerky.  Andrew also has some superstitions before a race, but he says he doesn’t want to elaborate.
The race will be this weekend at Lane Community College.  Good luck to Andrew, Tyler, and Kati!
