Blood Drive
by Alison Law

The Red Cross Blood Drive came to Reedsport High School on October 17th.  This made it possible for many high school students and teachers to donate blood, something they may not normally do.
Many students participated this year.  ASB officers sponsored the event and kept things organized. Said historian Scott Tisler, “A lot of people participated.  It went really well.”
Senior Lindsay Anderson said, “It's a very simple procedure” adding “It wasn't bad, it was kinda scary though.”
Almost anyone is eligible to donate, as long as they are in good health.  However, you must be 17 and over 110 pounds.  The procedure takes about ten minutes, and takes about a pint, or two cups, of blood.
This is normally not a problem; a person usually has between 10-12 pints in their body.  Each donation helps three people, as it is separated into three parts: red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, which help with clotting.
Someone who donates has a pretty quick recovery period.  Many people feel fine by the end of the day, though for some it takes a few days.  According to Red Cross information, the body can replace the plasma (liquid part) in hours and the cells within a few weeks.
Elaine Graves, the head nurse in charge of the drive said, “This is a positive opportunity for high schoolers.  They are more comfortable than in a regular setting.”   A blood drive normally happens every few months in downtown Reedsport, at the Masonic Temple.  The next drive will be on November 20th, from nine to five.
