Red, White, & Blue Without a Clue
by Christina Watson

Iraq was "useless killings" Highland janitor Billy Brown said in a postcard that he sent after being sent to war. About 1,760 men and women from Oregon have been exported to Iraq sense the war has begun.
Next was an introduction by a
member of a Thousand Cranes, then Mr. Rassmann came to the front of the audience, and introduced himself.  He refused to stand on stage before them so he stood on the ground below the stage.
He spoke about his experiences in Vietnam, and about the people he worked with there.  Also he spoke about the successful veterans, some of whom he is still in contact with such as Bill Rude, and editor of the Chicago Tribune.
With his bold statement about Bush, “A man in the White House, that I feel, doesn’t have a clue” he began his anti-Bush Pro-Kerry speech.  He said that he would rather not be preaching to the choir but rather changing people’s mind on their votes towards Bush.
When Rassmann was in Vietnam he was on one of the swift boats with Kerry.  The boats went under fire and he fell out.  He swam underwater, and when he surfaced for air he found that he was under fire as well.  Then He saw that the boats where coming back, and swam towards them,  Kerry’s boat let down a net and Rassmann grabbed a hold of it, but he was upside down and there was no easy way to get up.  That’s when Kerry came out, during the open fire and helped Rassmann into the boat.
Before the audience was free to leave he welcomed everyone to come see John Edwards, John vice president, in Eugene on Wednesday.

Guten Tag

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a foreign exchange student and study abroad in a different country?  Reedsport High School is fortunate enough to have one every year.  This year’s foreign exchange student is Carina Behrens.
Carina is from Germany and excited to be in America for the first time.  She lives near Cologne with about two million people housing in the city.  The biggest difference with populations are, in Germany houses are all squished together unlike here where
there is space in between the homes.
Carina loves America and is excited to be here and happy to be here, but she thinks it is crazy.  When she first moved here she
was living the Dickenson Family but has recently moved out.
She is currently living with the McLain family in Winchester Bay and enjoying it very much.
Currently the courses she is taking are Spanish I, Cadet Teaching, Ap English, Art III, Citizenship and Government, along with Pre Calculus.  She is
also an aide for Exploring World Cultures where she teaches seventh and eighth graders information about Germany along with basic German words and greetings.
"English is a pretty easy language."  She said, "It is one of the easiest languages to learn because even in non-English speaking countries you are confronted with it."
Carina still has two more years of schooling in Germany since their educational system is more strict than America’s.  After finishing school she would like to return to the U.S.A. to attend college.  Carina is currently a senior her at Reedsport High School and is 16 years old.  Carina has an older brother named Alexander who is 34 years old, her mom’s name is Angelika, her father’s name is Willi.
"The reason why I came to America is to improve my English skills along with make new friends."  Mainly she just wanted to know how another country acts and how it is in an American school.  Also to see if there’s really the stereotype we have of an American in Europe. She is planing on leaving between two to three days after graduation.
