Football 2003
by Justin Gannon

Since mid August the Reedsport High football team has been working with immense intensity.  With just nine practices and a three-day football camp under their belts, they had to face one of the toughest teams in the whole state of Oregon.
Illinois Valley showed up fully ready to play and defeated our team.  The next task was against state ranked Heppner.  The Reedsport Football team came up just short in another down to the wire game, losing 23-28.  Then their third and final non league contest, the boys traveled to Coquille with high spirits. Braves came home in celebration with their first win.  The celebration was short lived, though.
The first league game was against Myrtle Point and the Braves came up on the losing end yet again.  This was the first loss to Myrtle Point on our field in years. Realizing that with a poor recorded of 1-3, they better step it up if they wanted to go to state, the varsity boys started to increase the effort.  "I've seen a great increase in their effort over the last week of practice," stated Head Coach Lynn Fulps.
When they played Gold Beach, the second week of season, the team truly played their hardest and left everything out on the field.  This win renewed their spirit and started a winning streak.
The Yoncalla game wasn't much of a game.  The Braves came home with another easy victory.  The next week was the homecoming game against Bandon.  The Braves would let up against these Tigers. Homecoming King Tom Dailey averaged 20 yards per carry in a 46-20 win for the Braves. After a by-week, the Braves played at North Douglas.  On that cold night, Nick Riley ran the opening kick-off back 80 yards for a touchdown; and our boys never looked back.
Finally the Reedsport High Varsity football played their last conference game against the Oakers of Oakland.  The Braves slaughtered the  high spirited visitors  on our home turf.   Senior Brett Butler, playing hard on his senior night, caught passes from Daniel Mast in the end zone twice in the first half.
The Braves had a awesome 2003 football season.  Started quarterback, Daniel Mast, had 1426 yards passing and 20 touchdown passes so far this season.  Butler had 138 yards rushing and 536 yards.  Starting running back, Nick Riley, ahd 472 rushing yards.  The Braves will be continuing on this excellence into playoffs.

Vocal Jazz Fest
by Heather Leach
Wednesday, November 5th in the Reedsport High School auditorium the OMEA District 7 Vocal Jazz Festival was held from 9am to 1pm.  With a simple gold background accompanied by a small piano the singers really stood out.
Eight schools were present, seven high schools and one middle school. They were Reedsport, Brookings, Pacific, Marshfield, Bandon, Myrtle Point, North Bend, and Azalea Middle School.
When Reedsport got their turn at the stage their votes sang out two songs; A Wade in the Water, which is a African American Spiritual, and A Wonderful Day Like Today.
Lorna Murphy, our Choir director said, "We did great!  We had fun and learned a lot and I'm really happy with the performance."
During the second song they sang Cole Browning had a chance at a solo.  What did he have ot say about it?  "We had fun, {but} solos suck."
Who judged this vocal extravaganza; Mr. Christian Rosman.  He is from SWOCC where he's in charge of all vocal music.  When asked what he thought about Reedsport he said, "The Reedsport Jazz Choir is great!"
Lydia Tollefson added, "The judge, Mr. Rosman, pointed out our problems and helped us fix them."
All in all, great words were said about the festival.
