"Home of the Braves"

Ducks vs. Beavers Hall War
by Amanda Palmer
On the 18th of November the hall war began.   "Hall War"  is an annual activity for the junior high students.  Each year students would decorate one side of the hall Beaver colors and the other side Duck colors.  There are always many creative ideas for decorations and each side gets very competitive.  At the end of the week three judges decide which side of the wall is more creative.
The school did the hall war because the Beavers and Ducks played a football game, Civil War,  on Saturday the 20th. Before school everyone was rushing around trying to get Beaver and Duck decorations up on the walls.
Mrs. Prater said, “It's not fair that Mrs. Wright gets to have a teacher and her two daughters from Highland come and help put up the beaver fans decorations all down the hall.”
Students were working on the walls all day long, in the morning, at lunch, after school, and some teachers even let a few students out during class to work on the hall.
The Beaver fans said, “Mrs. Prater is unfair, she won't even help the Beaver fans out by lending out simple supplies like tape and makers. She won't even let the Beaver fans make posters in the library.”
There were three judges to judges who decided which side of the hall was more decorative, creative, and sportive of their team. They were Officer Smart,  Mrs. Sullens,  and Mr. Akre.
Even though the Ducks won the hall war they still tried to be friendly to the Beavers.

Honor Choir
by Mandy Foote

On Friday the 12 of November, six junior high students left for Coos Bay/North Bend area to sing in Honor Choir and arrived at 9:00 am.  Tia Smart, Kathy Schriver, Casey Fraley, Brittany Smith, Brittny Lupton, and Bebette Solorzano sang for the schools Honor Choir.
At the concert about eight schools picked their best junior high students from choir to participate in the honor choir concert.  Each school sang four songs together in the concert, “You’ve Got a Friend In Me”, “Sahyata”, “Exultijusti”, and finally “Danny Boy”.
The concert lasted about an hour and then the 134 honor band students were able to perform in the concert.  About 275 family and friends showed up to watch the nervous students.
All participants practiced from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm to sing in that night’s concert at 7:00 pm.  Tia Smart said “ The day was very long and tiring but overall it was a good experience and a fun one too.”  They practiced in a small uncomfortable room and soon they got pretty sick of practicing but according to them it was all worth it in the end.

Over Time Thriller
by Tailor Nunn
On November 15th the seventh and eighth grade teams had two very intense games against the Siuslaw Braves.
The seventh grade game was 18-49 with Siuslaw on top.  In the first half Reedsport had some trouble with there defense but after half-time the girls came out alive and ready to play.  Coach Casey Howard said, “If my girls would of played like they did in the second half it would of been a much closer game.”  Renee Roche led the braves with 5 points and stood out with her defense.  The next day at practice the girls worked on “D” so they can be on top of the game next time.
The eighth grade game started with a boom.  In the first quarter the Reedsport Braves were up 17 to 13.  Jessica Faglie came on top with her defense against Siuslaws' taller player and kept her rebounds to a minimum.  After the second quarter Reedsport went into the last half being very confident.  Right before the end of the game with Reedsport down two, leading scorer Chelsea Hitchcock made an important lay up to tie the game and put it into a 4 minute over time.
In an over time thriller, Siuslaw got a 5 point lead with only 1:32 left in the game.  In the very last seconds of the game Kim Church hit a bucket and Tonni Willis got fouled and hit two free throws which made the score 45-44 Reedsport.  Jessica Faglie made the winning shot which led Reedsport to their first win over there big time rivals.  Coach Casey Howard said, “It was the most exciting Jr. High game I have ever watched.”

A Disappointing Loss
by Jessica Faglie

On Monday November 22nd, Reedsport seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams traveled to Myrtle Point to play their second game of this years season.
Seventh grade starting off with a few minutes delay of game caused by late referees, were able to get in ten extra minutes of firing up.  The Braves took off with  fine defense against the Bobcats in the 1st quarter.  With Courtney Alferd scoring over 8 points  in the 1st half.  Still, the Braves were falling short of the Bobcats.  Braves played well in their second game, but sadly ended in another loss of 21-49.
Eighth grade Lady Braves started of taking the lead in the first quarter.  Braves were ahead until things started getting hot in the 3rd quarter.  Player #15 of Myrtle Point was on fire shooting two three pointers, taking the Bobcats to a six point lead over the Braves.  With three players at four fouls each, Coach McRae made some calls about shooting outside the 3 point line. With Tonni Willis confident about 3 pointers, she shot and scored, giving the Braves 3 points. With less than one minute #15 on the Myrtle Point team took the ball down the court, Chelsea Hitchcock fouled her.         Chelsea  fouled out. #15 shot twice, but only made one, giving Myrtle Point a four point win over the Braves. The final score was 38 to 42.
The seventh and eight grade basketball teams will be playing again on Tuesday the 23rd at Gold Beach. Good luck girls.

Field Trip Survey
by Kim Church

On November 23rd the seventh grade made an important decision.  The seventh graders took a survey which would choose where they would go for their annual seventh grade field trip.
Every year each grade raises money through the magazine drive and candy drive.  Usually the seventh grade teacher chooses where they go that year but this year there is a huge list of many fun ideas.  The eighth grade goes to  the  Rogue River on jet boats every year and they are very excited for it.
Even though Mrs. Gunn has the “final say” this shows the top choices.  There were many different field trips to choose from but there were two that came up on top.  They were the Waterpark in Eugene and the Portland Zoo.
The seventh and eighth grade had a magazine and candy bar fundraiser to earn money to go on the field trips.  The seventh grade had enough money for a wide variety of choices.  While most of the seventh grade choose the water park in Eugene still many students voted for the Portland Zoo.
