Pacific Visitation
by Kati Dickson Hawaiian Club advisor
and
Assistant Athletic Director, Jeff Grundon represented Pacific
University Thursday morning on November 18th. As a
representative, Grundon spoke to prospective college students in order
to recruit them.
Grundon spoke of the graduate and undergraduate programs offered at Pacific which is located
in
Forest Grove Oregon, about a 30 minute drive from downtown
Portland. He also talked about his personal experiences at
Pacific,
being alumni himself. Grundon started out at a public university
before
a friend convinced him to come to Pacific to complete his collegiate
years. Pacific’s small class size and highly educated professors is often times the overwhelming magnet attracting students to Pacific year after year. The student to staff ratio is 13:1. Pacific also offers 100% job placement rate, as well as over 16 division III and intramural sports including mens and womens wrestling. Any student of Pacific can also join any club at the school, if a student wants to start a club, he/she may do so. by Sara HollowayOnce again, Reedsport made it to AA Football State Playoffs but came up short and were defeated by Amity: 35-22. The teams both traveled to Pete Susick Stadium in Coos Bay. The Warriors only passed the ball four times during the November 12 playoff game. Reedsport's Jeff Kennedy caught an interception and returned it 60 yards scoring the first touchdown for the game. Schneider ran for the conversion. After Amity scored a touchdown, Reedsport's Daniel Mast ran in the ball 19 yards to add 6 points for the Braves. Junior Spencer Mitchell scored the conversion. ![]() Reedsport pushed to the 43 yard line in Amity territory, late in the game but Mast's pass was intercepted. The Braves led until the fourth quarter, while Mast rushed for 39 yards including a 19 yard touchdown. Mast went 9-20 for 89 yards and three interceptions. Reedsport turned the ball over 5 times throughout the game. Kennedy ran 59 yards in five passes. Casey Palermo threw the ball to Palermo, and Palermo threw the ball upfield to Buddy Phibbs, who made the catch on 3rd and 13 in Amity territory. Nick Schneider ran 3 yards for a touchdown but the run failed, which gave the Braves a 22-14 lead with 5:29 left in the third quarter. The Amity Warriors scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone to give them the go ahead and victory. Reedsport finished 7-3 over all and claimed second place in the Big Fir League. Head coach Lynn Fulps said, "The kids, they exceeded everything goal wise that I put out for them. They did a nice job." Some statistics for the game include 10 first downs, 119 passing yards, 2 fumbles, one recovery, and 6 penalties that cost them 34 yards. At the Big Fir League football coaches meeting, Reedsport players earned many all league titles. Daniel Mast received most valuable player for QB, first team all league as a QB and punter and second team defensive back. Three players received first team offense; lineman Armando Herrera, receiver Jeff Kennedy, and tight end Spencer Mitchell. Trevor Gardner was named first team defensive lineman and Casey Palermo was selected first team defensive back. Eric Chase was chosen for second team linebacker and Nathen Morris was selected as honorable mention for defensive lineman. Project Blessing is a Success
by Kati DicksonThanksgiving to most is a time to stuff their face with turkey, ham, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, while lounging around the TV watching the Turkey Bowl with family. Many families however are not that fortunate and the holiday season is not time of feasting, but a time of hunger. Reedsport High students swarmed the doorways of Safeway and Price N’ Pride on Saturday November 10th to ask for community members to pick up a few extra non-perishable items to donate needy families of the community over the holiday season. Project Blessing, put on by School-to-Work but non-members also participated, rounded up seventeen Brave students. Grades
9-12 served the community and withstood the elements outside of
Reedsports main groceries stores collecting donations from 10:00am
through 3:00pm. Over the course of those five hours over 1500 pieces of
food and non-perishable items, as well as over $26.50, were collected
and taken to Reedsport Presbeterian Church where food baskets are
prepared. Needy families are encouraged to pick up food baskets directly from the church. “Students involved in Project Blessing brought in lots of food and helped our community! "They are a great group of young adults.” School-to-Work advisor Paula Cline commented after seeing the results of the day. |
