About 1000 World War II veterans die everyday. There is now less time
for them to share their knowledge with the younger generations. The
students of Reedsport High School recently had the increasingly rare experience
of listening to veterans tell about their experiences in the war.
Near Veterans Day, six veterans came to talk about what they did in
World War II, speaking to a group of kids that don’t or barely remember the
Gulf War and to whom Iraq is the biggest conflict in memory. Social Studies
teacher Mr. Tymchuck said, “[It's] a neat tradition.”
This year Butch Thompson, Ken Deacon, Walt Naismith, Chet Carbough,
Mark Shipman, and Bill Lorenz spoke. Butch Thompson is an 80 year resident
of Reedsport. As a young man, he says he didn't give world events much
thought, until December 7th, 1941, the day of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
He compares it to 9/11, a defining moment for this generation.
Thompson served as a teacher at infantry school and he also
led patrols in Germany, looking for Germans and taking POWs. He says
war isn't anything like movies such as Saving Private Ryan, but there were
many horrible sights and casualties.
Another veteran who spoke to students was Ken Deacon, an Oregonian
who was born in Salem. He reminded the classes that as a member of the
Navy in the Pacific Theater, he was fighting the Japanese philosophy, not
the individual people. Deacon showed students some interesting of the
ships he was on and the battles he saw.
During the presentation, the veterans also had a table
set, a memorial to the veterans who weren’t with them. It included a
white table cloth, rose, lemon, salt and single unoccupied chair, all representing
something for the veterans. Their recollections were both nostalgic
and poignant, remembering their former colleagues.
