Volleyball Goes to State
Tournament
by Alison Law

After beating Myrtle Point in a very heated playoff game, Reedsport’s Varsity Volleyball Team went on to state, first in their league.  Matched up against good teams, Reedsport played hard, but just couldn't pull out any victories.  However, they did play their first two matches to three games, as opposed to rival Myrtle Point, who lost in two games to two of their opponents.
Going to state was also a learning experience.  Coach Karen Tibbles said, “The girls coming back next year got some valuable experience at the state level and have a clearer understanding of what it takes to compete at that level.”
In their first match against Corbett, the Braves lost in three, 25-22, 18-25, and 13-1.  Kelsey Fitzgerald had 3 kills and 21 digs, and Big Fir League MVP, Krista Wooley, had 10 kills with 24 digs.  Sara Kolander added 6 kills, 1 block and 14 digs.
The team lost to Glendale in their next match, though pushing it to three games, 17-25, 25-23, 7-15.  The Braves just had difficulty sustaining momentum.  Krista Wooley again led the way with 11 kills and 18 digs.  Sara Kolander had 4 kills, 2 blocks, and 12 digs and Chelsea Tibbles had 2 kills with 23 assists.  Sheila Manicke and Ashley Fulps added to the game with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The final match of the night was against Blanchet.  The Braves lost in two, 19-25 and 23-25.  Krista Wooley had 8 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 8 digs; Sara Kolander had 2 kills, 1 ace and 5 digs; Ashley Fulps had 1 ace and 10 digs; Sheila Manicke had 2 aces and 10 digs; Chelsea Tibbles had 15 assists with 1 kill.
Coach Tibbles was proud of her team.  She said, “It was a wonderful season full of exciting play.  It was great fun to finally solve the puzzle of Myrtle Point.  It is truly a season to remember.”

Band Honors Veterans at Election Assembly
by Alison Law

To a lot of students, Veteran's Day is just an excuse to be out of school.  We don't give it a lot of thought.  It's  just a day we can forget about homework and sleep late.  In Elkton things are different.
Six years ago, they started a tradition.  They set aside one day to honor veterans, becoming one of only three schools statewide.  The students of Elkton take pride in their assembly; it's a big deal there.
This year the organizers of the assembly asked the Reedsport High School Band to participate.  In the past, big schools, such as Marshfield have accepted and played for the veterans.
The Reedsport band, under the direction of Lorna Murphy played two songs, American Patrol and American Overture, a medley.  They were well received by the veterans.
Mrs. Murphy also sang the Star Spangled Banner, with Evan Wicks, solo trumpet.  She was more nervous about the band though.        She said, "This is the first time I've ever conducted a band [in performance], so I hope that didn't show."   It went fine, according to the band, although there was one false start.
In addition to the band, there were also readings of patriotic essays by the high schoolers and songs by the primary grades.  The assembly ended in a presentation of the veterans who served in various wars, from W.W.II to Vietnam.  Even included were some still serving in the military.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Veteran's Day.

Braves Slay the Dragons
by Justin Gannon
The first state playoff game for the Braves football team was last Friday in Monroe.  They arrived and first checked the playing field.  Seeing it was going to be a muddy night they were content.
The Monroe offense was held scoreless in the first quarter while Reedsport's defense kept the Dragons in negative yards.
In the second quarter, the Dragons scored their first and only touchdown of the night.  The Braves reacted immediately and scored on their next drive.  Then the Braves picked up a fumble and returned it for another touchdown.  The half time score was 18-7.
In the second half, the Braves didn't let up on their effort.  They scored twice more and won the game.  The final score was 32-7.
