After a season of practicing and qualifying at District, the competitors that threw the farthest and ran the fastest reached their final hurdle, State.
Kati Dickson competed the first day.  With a seed time of 12:11 in the 300
0 she was ready to run.  Just after the gun there was a pile up on top of her.  The officials restarted the race but Kati’s concentration was broken.  Though Kati Dickson did set a personal record of 12 minutes flat, it wasn’t enough to claim a top position.
Senior Chelsea Tibbles also attended the meet.  Chelsea threw the shot put 31-03.00 feet during district.  During State she was able to increase her distance by .25 to reach a distance of 31-03.25, it wasn’t enough to receive a medal.
The boys, who had four more competitors than their female teammates, put on more of a show.  Two of the boys, Chris Kaufmann and Justin Gannon, competed in three events each.
In the boys 100 meter dash Chris Kaufmann had a qualifying time of 11.90 in district.  He bettered his time to 11.63 for state; with that improvement Chris took home fifth place.  Chris also competed in the 200 meter.  With a time of 23.20, he claimed sixth place.
RHS’s 4x100 relay team, after many personnel changes, competed.  First leg Justin Gannon, second leg Mike Christofferson, third leg Jon Chan, and last leg Chris Kaufmann claimed fifth place with a time of 45.42.  Their District time was 45.19.  Carter DuVal went along with the team as an extra in case there were complications.
In the pole vault Robbie Feagles wasn’t able to reach his seed height of 11 feet, at State he was only able to fly 10-06.00.  Senior discus competitor, Jason Blum fell short of his seed throw of 125-05.  In javelin Justin Gannon missed his District length of 154-04 by only nine feet but still wasn’t able to place.  The boys team ranked 14th overall.
With the season over, all of the track athletes can look back on their experience with regret, remorse, excitement, or a sense of achievement.  No matter their feelings, the 2005 track team can now say, “I’m a seasoned vet.”  And for six lucky high school track competitors they can say, “I was there, I did that” whenever talk of State track is rekindled.

Golfers Take a Swing at State

Although the weather wasn't all that wonderful, both the Boys and Girls Varsity Golf teams were ready for their state competition on 16th and the 17th.  Both teams left Sunday morning in order to be well rested for the two day, 36 hole event.
Tukwilla, the Oregon Golf Association Course, was played by the boys team.  Their coach, Mr. Wells, stated, "It was some tough weather but they competed well."  Casey Palermo had an 18 hole score of 79 for the first day and 81 the second.  Alan Wheeler came in second for the Braves with a score of 79/81, while Jeff Kennedy came in third with 83/88.  Next came Tyler Hague with a score of 87/91 and Justin Lovell wrapped things up with a score of 99/97.
Although it was a close call between 1st and 2nd place the boys proudly came home with a second place trophy.  Mr. Wells said, "I'm losing six significant seniors from my varsity team this year, it'll be tough."
Mrs. Wells was extremely proud of her girls team when they came in 8th at state.  She said, "They showed a huge improvement throughout the year!"  While playing at the Eagle Crest Resort Course Aubrey Vaughn earned a 3rd place medal with the top Braves score of 80/83 while Marie Uhles came in second for the braves with 113/104.  Abby Wicks scored a 113/107 and Alex Black had a 122/105.  Lydia Tollefson wrapped the tournament up with a score of 128/135.  With no seniors on the team Mrs. Wells said, "I have high hopes for next year!"
