| Boys Fall at State by Alison Law On
March 3rd, the Reedsport Braves traveled to Pendleton fo
r
the OSAA
State Basketball Tournament. After an eight hour drive, they
arrived
and settled in. Their first game was against the Regis Rams on March
4th. Jeff Kennedy was the high scorer for the Braves with 18
points,
followed by Daniel Mast and Scott Tisler with 14 and 12 points. Blake
Muscardin scored the most for the Rams. The Braves played hard, but after leading in the first quarter, they were just outscored by the Rams. It was a close game, ultimately ending in a score of 70-63. Regis went on to win the championship against Santiam Christian, 62-44. The Braves played a second game in the consolation bracket on Friday against the Warrenton Warriors. Again, they just could not pull ahead. Daniel Mast scored 13 points; Scott Tisler also had 11 points, for a final score of 61-43, a win for Warrenton. Measure 30: Another Perspective By Alison Law As both a teacher and Mayor of Reedsport, Keith Tymchuck will have to face the ramifications of the failure Measure 30. The reduction in funding affects not only schools, but the city's budget. He answered a few questions about his feelings on the legislature, budget cuts, and the failure of Measure 30. How
do you feel about the failure of Measure 30?"I think it is unfortunate, and I am not quite sure I understand the anti-government attitude of this state." Where should our school cut spending? "Everything needs to be on the table, the last thing that should be cut is days." Do you have any ideas of how we could raise money or get extra funding for our school? "Fundraising is an option, but often not the best option. It is unfortunate that that is the way we have to do it. I think it needs to be more secure. I don't think we should have to determine how many new textbooks or computers we get by how many cookies we sell or how many cars we wash. That being said, we probably will have to fund raise somehow." As mayor, how does this affect you? "Less state funds will be available to cities because of Measure 30, and if the state cuts their police, then cities have to have more police patrolling, which also affects the city's budget." How much of this budget crisis has been caused by the legislature? "Some. Not necessarily this legislature, I think we have not been led well the last several years. I personally know several of the people on the legislature, they are good people, but I am disappointed in their lack of leadership." |
