Reaching Forward
by Heather Leach Just a week after the
District Swimming meet State popped up. RHS's two qualifying
swimmers, Aubrey Vaughn and Russ Johnson, climbed slowly onto the bus
to state on Thursday the 23rd, after a small party that included the
swim
team and Mrs. Tislers ice-cream cake. But the party was just
getting started for these two.
Aubrey had
qualified at District,
placing 2nd in the 100 yard freestyle and the 50 yard free. At
State, Aubrey came in with a time of 54.59 in the 100 yard free.
That time allowed her to claim the State title, she was the only RHS
swimmer to take first this year. In the 50 yard freestyle she
took fourth place with the time of 25.33. Reedsport received
ninth for the State Team title.Russ Johnson, the only male swimmer Reedsport sent to the State competition, qualified to swim in two races as well, the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle. At State Russ came in sixth place in both of his events with times of 23.45 seconds in the 50 and 52.31 in the 100. Russ Johnson is only a sophomore swimmer and is already bringing State medals home. Reedsport's boys team finished in a tie for 16th place. Congratulations to Aubrey and Russ. Going For Gold

The State Wrestling tournament was held at the fair
grounds in Salem February 18th and 19th.
There
were four wrestlers that competed at State. They were junior
Spencer
Mitchell, weight class 275, junior Armando Herrera, weight class 215,
senior Trevor Gardner, weight class 189, and senior Nick Schnieder,
weight class 152. State is an experience that coach Jones thought all of his seniors should have. Because of this, although not all seniors qualified, Jones brought all of them to observe the meet. Spencer Mitchell, 275, took first place. Spencer said, "I didn't think that I would have done as well as I did but once the season started my confidence got built up and now I'm ready for next year." Nick Schneider also placed at State in eighth. Nick said, “I had a fun time, I wish I could have done better in state and I will miss my fellow wrestlers." Braves Fall at Play-Offs
by Jessica FaglieAs the varsity boys basketball team entered the first round of the OSAA 2Z State
championships Tuesday night at Cascade College, they took a 23 point
loss against Westside Christian Eagles.Although starting players racked up 27 points in the first half, it still wasn’t enough to get the Braves ahead at half-time. After half-time, the Braves added on 21 more points resulting in a final score of 48-71, with the Eagles taking the win. The Braves graduate seven seniors, Ryan Hitchcock, Daniel Mast, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Merchel, Jeff Kennedy, Casey Palermo, and injured Tyler Hague. These seven played their last game as Reedsport Braves this year. Leaving big shoes for the under classmen to fill. Congratulations on making it to the state play-offs boys! The school and the community enjoyed cheering on the team. End to a Tough Season To the Seniors it may have been the saddest night in their life. For
Reedsport seniors Mandi Schafer, Megan Henning, Chelsea Tibbles,
Victoria Schaff, Carina Behrens it would be the last game of their
High School career. On February 17th, the Myrtle Point Bobcats came to the Lady Brave’s home court. The girls put on their game faces throughout the entire game but fell short in the end with a final score of 34-74. Mandi Schafer had 8 points for the Lady Braves, just short of junior Deanne Heubner’s 12. Also scoring for the Braves was Victoria Schaff with seven points, Trista Willis put five points on the board, and Ashley Fulps added two. Last Game in League On Thursday, February 17, Reedsport Varsity Boys Braves played their
last home game and scheduled game of the season. The game began with
senior recognition. Proud parents stood beside their senior players and
posed for the cameras.Once the game had started, the boys kept a good lead for some time. Players Jeff Kennedy and Daniel Mast lead the boys to keep the braves in scoring to keep the team one step in front of Glide. As the game proceeded, the team's points were too close to call. Both teams seemed to dominate the court with not only their defense but ball handling skills as well. This was a very fast paced game where both teams struggled in order to come out on top. The game was down to it’s last minute, when the braves boys started biting their nails, unsure if they were going to win. For the last ten seconds of the game, the boys were still anxious. The score ended with 79-75, a close call, but a win for the Reedsport Braves. This win put the boys into the district 2A playoffs. Ending Season on a Losing Note JV Girls Kati Dickson On thursday, February 17th, the JV. Lady Braves fought there last
battle in the RHS gym against the Bobcats of Myrtle Point. Although the
girls played hard, they fell short of the victory of there last game.
When the final buzzer rang at the end of the fourth quarter the
Braves
had a total score of 21, while the Bobcats put in 55, forcing Reedsport
to be defeated by 34 points. Jordan James, Abby Wicks, and Katie Corcoran made the most points for the Braves, scoring four points each. Kelsey Moore scored three points, while Lyndsay Holden, Amanda Arcenaux, and Carina Beherns, better known among the Braves as “The German”, each made two points for Reedsport. This season was special for Reedsports German foreign exchange student Carina Behrens. After the game, Carina reflected on her first expierence playing in a team sport, and competing in America. “It was fun, I love basketball. The girls here are really good, at least in comparison to me. I learned a lot about basketball this year.” Because Germany does not have school sport, Carina did not play basketball in her home country. Due to her experiences playing for the Braves she is definately interested in getting on a team in her home town of Spich, Germany. JV Boys Christina Watson The JV boys basketball team took on the Myrtle Point Bobcats on February 17th, 2005. The braves weren't able to keep the Bobcats back. One of the top scorers of the night was Mike Christoffersen and Justin Fulps. Justin Fulps was able to steal the ball from the Bobcats and run it down the court to then pass the ball to junior Skyler Squiglio where he was able to add two points to the scoreboard. These two points were scored during the third quarter which helped the Braves to get a little closer to the Bobcats. This play also helped the Braves come to the final score of 48-58. With it being the last game of the season there was much emotion involved. Some were sad due to the loss but in the end faces showed anticipation for the next season to come. |
