"Home of the Braves"

Diving Ahead
by Heather Leach

At six fifteen in the morning, before the sun decided to show its face the Reedsport swim team was climbing on a bus to travel the two and a half to three hour trip to Philomath last Saturday, the eighth.  The six swimmers who went to compete were armed with a pillow, blanket, and head phones for the ride.
Beyond the three hour drive, upon arriving at the pool, huge flakes of snow were falling all around the swimmers in their comfy sweats.  This was no time for snow angles though, these athletes were thoroughly concentrated on the task ahead.
Reedsport had six swimmers present at the six team meet.  "I felt like there was no way we could possible compete with the huge teams that were there." one of the swimmers commented.  With their belongings secure in the school hallway the Braves took the water.
Once they dove in there was no stopping them.  Though the times were unavailable at this time, everyone can be sure the swimmers swam hard and are going to go far.

Varsity Boys Take the Helm
by Brian Kruse

Reedsport Guys took the lead once again throughout this basketball season.  With this year’s season standings being 0-1 the guys feel okay about starting the season with a okay record.  The Braves are trying to stay in the ranks to the playoffs and a chance for the state title.
With a treacherous score of 57-73 the Braves took the loss to the Oakers. The Braves overcame this loss with a win over the Pacific Pirates.  The final score being 65-40 the Braves brought their confidence up even more.
Top leading scorers for the Braves were Casey Palermo with 14, Daniel Mast with 10 and Tyler Hague with a total of 9.
The Braves stay in the running and go for the gold.
“The game was great and I enjoyed playing,” said Tyler Hague.

Lady Braves Victorious
by Brian Kruse

During last Tuesday’s game against Pacific the Ladies were on fire, with their great defense and  tactics for scoring on offense the girls came out with a win under their belts.  The Lady Braves traveled to Pacific Pirate territory to battle for the win.
Overcoming their one loss with the win the Braves increase their league record to 1-1.  With the first win of the season the Braves hope to get on with a better season.
Victoria Schaaf was the leading scorer with 27 points and a three pointer.  Other ladies who helped were Deanne Huebner with 18, Mandi Schafer with 14 and a three pointer, and also Ashley Fulps for 11 also putting in a three point shot.
The final score was Pacific with 6 and Reedsport Lady Braves 54 the Braves come out with confidence on their side.
With having great scorers and awesome defense they all hope to play well enough to have a great league record and make it into the playoffs.

The Surprise Meet
by Kati Dickson
What started out to be a normal practice day for the RHS swim team, ended up being one of the most bizarre meets of the season. Before the whole swim team even got to the pool, the Philomath Warriors walked in expecting to have a meet.
The only problem was Reedsport was not expecting to be hosting a meet. There were no lane lines, most of the RHS team had still not arrived including Head Coach Mark Gibbons, and the Reedsport Aqua Braves (age group swim team) had occupied half of the pool for their practice.
R.A.B. coach Leanne Bennett quickly sprang into action and had her kids putting in lane lines and setting up chairs for the timers, while the rest of Reedsport's team strutted in to find they had a meet.
By 4:30 pm the first race of the night was ready to take place, the 200 yard Medley Relay. Due to the Braves small swim team this year, Reedsport didn’t have a girls or boys relay. The duel drug on for about two hours before the Warriors packed up their swimming bags an embarked on the nearly three hour bus-ride home.
The Reedsport Swim team would like to thank R.A.B. and Coach Leanne for ending their practice early and helping run the duel.
Due to the odd circumstances of this meet, there are no official results.

Pirates Raided Of Home Win
by Jessica Faglie

On Tuesday January 4, 2005, the JV boys basketball team started off the new year taking a victory over Pacific Pirates.
With the Pacific lacking a few points at halftime, this gave the Braves a chance to get a big lead on the Pirates.  That was exactly what the Braves did.
Reedsport’s Pat Harris, gave the Braves a six point lead over Pacific with two three pointers.  With third quarter ending, the Pirates were down by a few, but there was not enough time to catch up with the Braves.
Reedsport walked away with a victory, the Pirates on the other hand walked away sadly with a 25 point loss.

JV Girls Plunder Pirates
by Christina Watson

The JV Girls Basketball team took on the Pacific Pirates on January 4th.  The Lady Braves sunk the Pirate's ship with out a second thought.  The game was one of the best of the season for the JV Girls team.
The JV girls went home satisfied with their 48-2 win against the Pirates.
The Lady Braves did a great job of stealing the  ball from the hands of the Pirates.  This game was by far one of the greatest wins of the JV girls season.  Amanda Arceneaux was so hyped up after the game she would tell anyone about it, even a week after it took place.

Aqua Braves Host For Meet
by Christina Watson

The Reedsport Braves took on Cottage Grove, Philomath and Phoenix in a swimming match at Highland on January 4th.
The Braves swam some amazing races against the other schools with many of the swimmers improving their times and strokes.
The Aqua Braves swam only the strokes and laps they had people enough to fill.  the one thing swim fans notice about our team is the size of the team.  The Aqua Braves team is not the largest group around with only eight athletes compared to the usual thirty something on most teams.
Yet regardless of the team size, they still manage to stay competitors in the meets and take a few of the better places in rank.
