Winter Assembly 2003
by Alison Law
What traditions are there at Reedsport High School? One that comes to mind is the annual Winter Assembly. Every year, just before Christmas Break, the student body comes together to enjoy a fun period of skits and Mr. Tymchuck’s famous rewrite of the poem “'Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
The skits began with the staff.  The choir, which consisted of various teachers, secretaries, and aids, sang and danced to Jingle Bell Rock.  The song was played by teachers Mr. Fulps and Mr. Wiggans, and parent Dr. DuVal.  Everyone in the auditorium was rocking out to their music.
After that was the ASB's skit.  Their impersonations of certain memorable teachers had the whole school cracking up.  One by one, students dressed and acting like teachers sat on the lap of Santa Claus, played by Scott Tisler, and told him exactly what they wanted for Christmas.
Next up was the freshman skit.  Justin Fulps played Saturday Night Live’s the “Ladies Man” and interviewed some fellow freshman.  He stayed cool despite some technical difficulties.
The combined sophomore/junior skit was also an SNL takeoff.  Ashley Fulps played Matt Foley, motivational speaker, who spoke to a family about the dangers of drugs.  The family, which consisted of Aubrey Vaughn, Jaxum Spencer, Megan Henning and
Buddy Phibbs, was shocked by his
 antics.
American Idol was the topic of the senior skit.  Many idol wannabes tried out before judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson,  played by Rachel Johnson, Kelsey Fitzgerald, and Jeremy Camphouse.  They included everything from a country guy (Chris Wheeler) to an opera singer (Faith Kreskey) to a rapper (Alicia Larson).  There was even a rendition of Santa Baby from Emily Vaughn, which had every guy on his feet.

A special part of this year's assembly was the debut of a film made by students Josh Vernon, Jason Epley, Ryan Spencer, Nick Blundon, and Loss Story.  The film puzzled and amazed many,  despite the fact that the real ending could  not be shown.
At last it was Mr. Tymchuck’s poem.  This tradition is especially looked forward to; it's not every day you hear a teacher commenting on the students, staff, and daily high school gossip. As always, the poem had everyone laughing and blushing when they  heard their name.
All in all, this years Winter Assembly was a success!

A Winter Gathering
 By Alison Law

On December 18, the first concert of the school year took place. Many were involved; over a hundred students from all three schools participated.  From the sixth grade beginning band to the experienced high school band, excitement was high and so was the holiday spirit.
"A Winter Gathering" was the name of the concert, and it was directed by band teacher Lorna Murphy.  It began with a performance from the sixth graders.  Their songs, Jingle Bells, Good King Wenceslas, and Dreydl, Dreydl, were very impressive considering the students have only been playing for six weeks.
The Junior High School Band  also played a variety of Christmas classics such as  Joy to the World and  In the Christmas Mood.  Together with the High School Band they played Suite of Carols, a compilation of three other well known pieces.  The high school played slightly more difficult pieces, Christmas in Sussex and Christmas Canticle.  They also played themes from the ballet The Nutcracker by Tschaikovsky.
After a short intermission, the choir sang several songs, both holiday and non holiday.  They included I've Got Peace Like a River, Something Told the Wild Geese, and Goodwill to All This Year.
