When I Grow Up...
by Michele Kirk

Young kids always look up to those that are older, especially high schoolers.  When you are in elementary school you always want to grow up to be like the "tall" kid who wears his lettermans jacket everywhere or the cheerleader in their uniform.  Kids between the grades of Kindergarten through fifth had the opportunity to become cheerleaders for a week during a camp put on by the Reedsport Braves Cheerleading Squad

After school the cheerleaders would rush to the gym at Highl-and to see 63 kids anxiously awaiting the arrival for two hours full of chaotic cheering and dancing.  Rehearsals were held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday where the participants, who paid a fee of $25 and received a camp tee-shirt, learned 3 cheers, Hey Crowd, Who's the Best, and Braves Beat The.  They also learned how to do a toe touch and the star/spread eagle.  On Thursday the young cheerleaders visited the high school gym to have their final rehearsal for the next night's events.
Friday night was the big night.  Until half-time of the game against Pacific on Feb. 4th, those that attended the cheerleading camp performed alongside the RHS Cheerleading Squad.  When half-time rolled around everyone gathered together and performed a combination of 2 dances to show off what they had worked hard at to learn during the previous week.
"I loved working with all the kids.  I couldn't wait until the end of the day to get a bunch of hugs and see all those smiling faces.  I'm so proud of them.  They did great!", said senior Nikki Williams.
