There Can
Be a Female President
by Alison Law
A few days ago my
friends and I were having a pretty heated political debate. There
were a lot of issues on which we did not see eye to eye, but to me one
of the most striking was about the possibility of a woman as President
of the United States. They argued that although the U.S. may be ready
for a female president, the world is not. They went on to say that
since leaders in the Middle East don't let their own women vote or hold
office, they wouldn't deal with a female President of the United
States.
I totally disagree with this assumption for a number of reasons.
First of all, many countries have had successful female leaders. Dating back to Cleopatra, countries have been led by women. Other notable examples include Catherine the Great of Russia and Elizabeth I. In more recent history, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of England and Indira Ghandi was Prime Minister of India, which has one of the largest populations in the world. Secondly, why should we let other countries decide whether our president is male or female? Didn't the current administration say that one of the reasons to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan was to bring freedom to women and make things more equal? We should not let the standard and repression in other countries tell us who we should elect as president. The excuse that foreign leaders won't respect or listen to female presidents is just plain wrong. They don't necessarily listen to presidents now, even if they are male, and women have already proven that they can lead a large, industrialized country. The world IS ready for the U.S. to have a female president, and even if they weren't, we are and that is what really matters. It Was
Wrong

I have to say that I witnessed one of the worst cases of bad sportsmanship I have ever seen. At the home basketball game on Friday against Pacific a few of our so called "elite" student body went over and sat and cheered, even did the "stomp", in Pacific's student body section. It's bad enough that Reedsport was beating Pacific by about 20+ points then to have our kids go over and rub it in their faces was just appalling, I'm sure that they were already very discouraged and didn't need that too. I have to admire the Pacific teams and fans. These kids get beat every game horribly but they keep working hard on the court and their fans keep cheering for their team. They could be upset and be poor sports but they aren't. I feel these kids from RHS should be reprimanded in some way. In the very least they should send a written apology to the Pacific students and maybe they shouldn't be allowed to attend any more games if they are going to act like that! I watched the instigator of this not realizing what was happening and they should know better. When I was in school, RHS prided ourselves on our school spirit and winning the sportsmanship award every year, I hope this incident doesn't get swept under the table. If you want us to put your editorial up you MUST include your name (Sponge Bob doesn't count). Otherwise we cannot put it up! We've had great stuff but couldn't put it in because of a name. |
