Impact of Measure 30
By Alison Law

With the failure of Measure 30, the school district must make decisions on what to reduce or eliminate to absorb the approximately $578,500 reduction in funding. At the February 11th school board meeting, the Reedsport School Board decided to cut seven days from the school year.  Five Mondays will be cut starting on April 26th.  They will continue through the end of May.  With Memorial Day, this means there will be no Monday school days in the entire month of May.  Two curriculum days in June will also be eliminated,  the 8th and the 9th, after students have left for the year.
Reedsport High School  principal, Pam Vander Kley, was asked about the measure and its effect on the school district. In reply she said, "The failure of Measure 30 is the result of a financial crisis in the State of Oregon.  Measure 30 was to help in the hope to sustain programs in Health Care, Public Safety and last but not least Education.  For our district, cutting seven days from our school calendar this school year - only cushions a more disastrous financial picture for the 2004-2005 school year.  I am sad that students will be away from the educational process - seven less days and that the staff will also lose seven pay days."
When asked about what types of cuts were being considered for next year, Principal Vander Kley said, "All school programs, co-curricular activities including sports programs, staff configurations and the possibility of more days cut from the calendar will be considered.  The budget committee will meet and begin the process of brainstorming - considering all options."
Students at the high school have been worried about the cuts, especially when they relates to sports programs. As a result, many rumors have been circulating.  Principal Vander Kley encourages everyone to stay away from the 'rumor trap.' "Rely on yourself to get the correct and factual information.  Attend budget meetings and school board meetings, read the newspaper and listen to your local television news reports.  For the most part all budget and board meetings will be 'public' and you are invited to attend.  As far as particular sports programs being cut - nothing has been decided for next school year."

State Swimming
By Kati Dick

State is meet that shows who has worked harder, who swims more, who practices more, and who just has more talent. Reedsport sent six out of ten of their swimmers to state. Rachel Johnson, Emily and Aubrey Vaughn, Kati Dickson, Russ Johnson, and Leo Castaneda were all competitors in the 2004 State Championship Swim Meet held at Ozborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis over the weekend. Although Reedsport's swim team is small, they had the highest scores per swimmer than any other team in their league.
Aubrey Vaughn raced the 500 free and placed second with an outstanding, personal best time of 5:28. Aubrey also took 4th in the 50yd free. Sister Emily Vaughn placed 5th in the 50yd free and 4th in the 100yd free.
The Vaughn girls teamed with Rachel Johnson and Kati Dickson for the 200yd Medley relay as well as the 200yd free relay. The girls placed 6th in the medley relay and 7th in the free relay. Leo Castaneda swam the 200yd I.M. where he placed 8th, and then he swam the 100yd free and finished in 6th. Russ Johnson, the only freshman to make it to state for the Braves, finished 8th in both the 100yd free and the 50yd free. "The state swim meet was very exciting; it was a good finish for a great season." Coach Mark Gibbons remarked.

State Wrestling
By Armando Herrera

On February 19th, Jeremy Camphouse traveled to the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, for the two day state wrestling tournament.
Jeremy Camphouse was the only wrestler from Reedsport to qualify for State.  When asked how he felt about going to state Camphouse said," It was crazy, there were a lot of wrestlers there, but no matter the numbers, I will give a 150%  in every match."   Jeremy Camphouse wrestled five total matches, by pinning his first two opponents it led Camphouse to a record of four and one, losing his only match during the semi-finals.      By winning four out of his five matches it was enough to win 3rd place at State.  When asked about his feelings as they put the medal around his neck, he said." It was a real cool feeling."
