Swimming District
By Kati Dickson

All season the Reedsport Swim team has been preparing for the meet that determines everything, the meet that decides who is done with swimming for the year and who goes on to state. Despite the pressure, the Braves still racked up four 1st place medals, three 2nd place medals, as well as two 3rd place finishes. All together the Braves sent 6 out of their 10 swimmers to state; which will be held in Corvallis on the 19th and 20th.
On Saturday, the Girls Medley Relay  (consisting of Rachel Johnson, Emily and Aubrey Vaughn, and Kati Dickson) started the day off right and earned a District Champion tittle with a personal best time of 2:02.68, beating their time from prelims by over two seconds.  The guys gave it their best in the relay as well, managing to pull in a 4th place finish. Robby Feagles swam backstroke for the Braves, while Leo Castaneda swam breaststroke, Russ Johnson raced butterfly, and Dan Dickson anchored with freestyle. “It is on of the best teams I have ever been on.” Senior Dan Dickson tells us after the district meet.
Leo Castaneda showed off his knowledge of all four strokes in the 200yd IM. The race starts with a grueling 50yds of butterfly, followed by another 50yds of backstroke, then 50yds of breaststroke, and finally 50yds of freestyle.  In the end Leo finished in 2nd place.  After the IM, Leo swam the 100yd free, where he also got 2nd.  About his senior  year, Leo said, "I feel my senior year went well for sustaining a shoulder injury during the summer that still affects me today.  I didn't get many PR's, but I can't complain about my performances.  The only bummer is that if I had swam the butterfly, I'd be seeded in the top six at state."
In the Girls 50yd Free The Vaughn sisters captured 2nd and 3rd, Aubrey being the faster of the two by just .13 seconds. Later in the meet, Senior Emily Vaughn placed 3rd in the 100yd Free. Aubrey Vaughn went on to become yet another District Champion for the Braves in the longest race offered at high school swim meets, the 500yd Free.
Freshman Russ Johnson claimed two District Championships in the 100yd Free and the 50yd Free. Led by the Vaughn sisters, the Girls 200yd Freestyle relay gave it all they had and earned their right at 2nd place on the podium.
Senior Rachel Johnson said, "We did great this year, even for only [having] 10 people participate."  Emily Vaughn, also a senior, said,"Our swimsuits were hot and so was our relay team."
Overall, Coach Mark Gibbons said, "To sum up our season, we were short on numbers, but long on heart.  At the district meet everyone improved their times.  We scored more points per swimmer than did any other team."
