Pride
by Michele Kirk
Pride is what runs this world. A
proper definition is: 1.
A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect. 2. Pleasure or satisfaction taken in
one's work. People should have pride in everything that
they do or anywhere that they may surround themselves. By doing
so it makes things positive.
In the eyes of a student it is easy to see that pride in RHS is fading. School needs to be a place that a student would want to attend, with paper being thrown on the floor and seeing others being disrespectful to their peers, it does not make school an inviting environment. There was a bomb threat on February 11th causing a school closure. Although this day will be made up later on in the year it has tampered with the education that everyone deserves to receive. Until the age of 16 it is mandatory that a person goes to school. If everyone took the time to have some pride in their work and school it would make those years of education much better. Everyone deserves to be given an equal opportunity to learn and to have pride in our school, community, and in ourselves. If we don't like something we are the only one's that can take the action to make it better. FBLA Districts In Reedsport, one often hears about the success of the high school sports teams but students at RHS often excel in another area, FBLA. The Future Business Leaders of America recently attended the Rogue Umpqua District Skills Conference, a competition for students to prove their business savvy by taking part in a variety of tests. Each member had two business related events in which they competed against several schools from all around southern Oregon. Almost 400 students from about 15 school attended the conference at Umpqua Community College. Thirty-one represented Reedsport High School. Of these 31, 22 placed in their event. The top ten finishers in each event were recognized at the conference, and of those, the top seven will advance to the state conference in April. As in years past, the Reedsport Chapter took home several top placers.
They had first place finishers, second only
to FBLA powerhouse Hidden Valley. Twelve students placed in the
top three. Students competed in both individual and team events. For the second year in a row, a Reedsport team took first in Entrepreneurship. Team members Andrew Merschel, Jesse Jackson and Casey Palermo also did well in their individual events, where Merschel took another first in Marketing Other first place finishers include Tyler Hague in Business Calculations, Alison Law in Business Communication, and Brian Law in Introduction to Business. Reedsport had two teams compete in Network Design. Team One, made up of Buddy Phibbs, Jaxum Spencer, and Josh Savey, placed 6th and Team Two, Jesse Barnum and Justin Fulps, placed 5th. Both teams will move on to state. Heather Leach and Alison Law, yearbook editors, placed 6th in Desktop Publishing and will also advance to the state competition. FBLA advisor Mrs. Law said, "We did an outstanding job. We made an excellent showing, especially since there were 400 students there, instead of last year's 150. FBLA is the only remaining club at RHS besides School-to-Work. They have raised all the money to attend conferences and competitions through fundraisers such as concessions and sweatshirt sales. They now have an active membership of 44 students. |
