Blood Suckers
by Jonathan Hoaglin
On December 2nd, 40 pints of blood were successfully
donated to the Red Cross
Blood Drive. The Red Cross came out of
Sutherlin, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This is the second year in a
row that they have come to Reedsport High School. At 1 pint per
person, 40 people successfully gave blood, out of the 65 that
volunteered. It took an average of 10 minutes per person to give
blood, and about 45 minutes including the time taken to ask
questions. To give blood it was required to be seventeen years and older, or sixteen with parent permission. “It is a good way for students to give blood for the first time. They’re able to share the experience with their friends and do a very unselfish act,” said Mrs. Tisler, the Blood Drive Chairperson. The donators were rewarded with one hour community service credit and a donators card. The card will come to them in the mail. Juice, cookies, shirts, and stickers were also provided for the donators. “The community service was a good incentive to give blood, but I would have done it anyway,” commented Tyler Varland, a senior who gave blood. Some people chose not to give blood, like Amy Smith and Sara Moss, because they were afraid of needles or their parents would not let them. Dance with Flakes
by Christina Watson As the students
started filtering in to the beautifully decorated cafeteria, which
acted as the dance hall for the night, the tunes began to play.
Many
students recomended that the dance should have
been further advertized and some believed that the dance should have
had a DJ control the music. But, against even the strongest
oppinion, most students had fun. This dance was the first annual Winter Dance. The walls were decorated with scenes of winter and Christmas. The windows were
covered with Christmas trees and snowflakes. The
opposing wall held a mural painted by Mrs. Parter. Unlike the Homecoming dance, the dress was informal, and many students showed up in jeans and normal school clothes. This made many students feel more at home and less restricted. Ashley Fulps made the cd's with all of the music for the dance and Josh Savey acted as the DJ. Between dancing to the prefect song, and making sure everyone was having a blast, she even found time to ask her father for a dance. By the end of the dance most everyone was tired but no one is ever ready for the chiling cold weather outside. |
