Saddam Hussein Captured: RHS Views
by Heather Leach and Kati Dickson
Andrea Campbell, Freshman
Now that  Saddam Hussein has been  captured,  how do you feel about the war in Iraq?

"Well, I'm happy that Saddam can never oppress the Iraqi people again. My feelings for the war havn't changed though. I know that our soldiers have a hard time ahead of them. It will take a while to get Iraq's democracy going and it will take a while for the Iraqi people to get used to running their own country. I think that Saddam getting captured will give them more confidence and help the Iraqi people in the long run."

What do you think we should do with him now that he is in our custody?
"I think that we should give him a trial, and when he is found guilty he should be stoned. The families of the ones he has killed should be the ones to stone him."

Will Johnsen, Senior
Now that  Saddam Hussein has been  captured,  how do you feel about the war in Iraq?
"I think the war is basically over now. I hope that this will lead to the hostilities dying down and our people returning home."

Dharmi Patel, Junior
Now that  Saddam Hussein has been  captured,  how do you feel about the war in Iraq?
"Now that  Saddam Hussein has been captured I think that many of our troubles are gone. America went into Iraq to find Saddam, to find weapons of mass destruction, which have not yet been found. Now that we have him, I feel that this could bring us closer to finding Osama Bin Laden, and then the President can stop the war on terrorism."

What do you think we should do with him now that he is in our custody?

I am suprised that we found him so close to his hometown. But the thing that suprised me more was that when we found him, he had a gun and did not shoot, and no one got hurt. I think that we should keep trying to get him to answer questions that the U.S. needs to know. Saddam did a lot of cruel thing to the Americans without a reason.  But I don't think that the U.S. should kill him, because the U.S. does not  need to go and kill, like Saddam Hussein.

Mr. Swanson, Social Studies teacher
Now that  Saddam Hussein has been  captured,  how do you feel about the war in Iraq?

I feel as strongly as ever about our war in Iraq. Beside the fact that we delivered these Iraqis from a man who terrorized, opressed, and killed countless numbers of his own people, we also helped in the establishment of a democratic goverment. This will not only have huge implications on Iraq, but with every country in the Middle East.

What do you think we should do with him now that he is in our custady?
I think that we need to see that Saddam is brought to justice by either handing him over to Iraq, or an international court to be tried for all of his inhumane acts on society.

NikeGo!
By Heather Leach and Alison Law

On Wednesday, December 17th, congressman Peter DeFazio and Nike representative Jill  Zanger visited Reedsport High School. Why? To bring bring the news that Congressman DeFazio was donating $2,000 to Reedsport's sports.
NikeGo sponsored a competition with the congressional offices to see who  could get the most athletic shoes to recycle. The winners would recieve $4,000. Winning congressman Peter DeFazio has donated half of the money to his hometown, Springfield, and the other half to RHS.
Why did he decide on Reedsport? He said he admired the the tremendous spirit of the community, despite all the hardships it's had to face.  With blows to industry, the economy, and school funding, Reedsport schools have struggled.  He also knows Ron Kreskey, a member of our school board, and has heard about our sports.
NikeGo is Nike's U.S. signature community affairs program.  It's the company's long term committment to help kid stay physically fit and acctive.  Re-use A Shoe is part of the program.  It uses sports shoes to make new tracks and sports facilities.  A local exmaple of this is the track at Marshfield High School.
Reedsport is currently looking into getting a recycling box for its own used for sports shoes and maybe a new track in the long run.
