| FBLA State by Alison Law Basketball has games,
golf has matches, and Knowledge Bowl has tournaments, but what about
FBLA? FBLA has the State Business Leadership
Conference. Every year, promising future business leaders
from all over Oregon convene at the Doubletree Jantzen Beach Hotel for
testing, workshops, and socializing. Thirty-three
students and three advisors attended the conference from
Reedsport.
Nearly all student FBLA members had qualified for state through
district competitions and were excited about state.
The weekend started on April 4th with an early morning bus ride to Portland. The group stopped at Clackamas Town Center for a little shopping, and then was off to their hotel to prepare for opening session. Once in their business attire (strictly enforced by FBLA), the Reedsport Chapter headed down to the hotel ballroom to learn the schedule of events for the conference and also hear the keynote speaker, Toody Byrd. After the session, most members attended the District V and VI meeting, where chapter recognition awards were passed out and students heard the candidates for District Vice President. As District V and VI are merging within the next year, a new region name was voted on. The new region encompassing most of southern Oregon will be called the Rogue Umpqua Region. After the meeting, students were able to relax, with the notable exceptions of the Parliamentary Procedures, Entrepreneurship, and Desktop Publishing Teams, who began their testing that night. Monday began
early
for the Entrepreneurship Team, consisting of Jason Epley, Casey
Palermo,
and Josh Vernon, who won their written test the night before.
They
were sequestered at 7:45 for their presentation later that
morning.
Meanwhile, the other chapter members began to wake up and get ready for
their
written tests. Most finished their testing in the morning and
headed
over to the Jantzen Beach Mall for some more shopping before the
night’s
events, which included the delegate dinner and a dance. Three
Reedsport
freshmen were chosen for the delegate dinner, where they voted on their
Region
Vice President, Executive Vice President, and State President.
This
year's delegates were Andrea Campbell, Chase Landrey, and Jared
Mast.
After the traditional dinner at BJ’s, the rest of the Reedsport
students
hung around the hotel or went to the dance. Chapter President
Kelly
Merschel and Treasurer Abby Harris dyed the hair of all the advisors,
Mrs.
Tisler, Mrs. Kaufmann, and Mrs. Law.
The next morning, the awards ceremony was held. The first person called to the stage from Reedsport was Kelly Merschel, who took third place in Business Law. The Entrepreneurship Team placed ninth in their event. Alison Law was first in her two events, Introduction to Business and Introduction to Business Communication. In Marketing, Andrew Merschel took sixth. To get back for track meets and baseball and softball games, the chapter left early. Everybody was pretty tired by that time, and the bus ride home was quiet. Still ahead for FBLA are the officer elections. FBLA officers would also like to remind members to return either their money or coupon booklets to the office. Math and Skills Day by Heather Leach
SOCC has a day every year when they invite schools to compete in
various events. This year was no
different, SOCC District Math and Skills Day was held on
Thursday April, 1st.
Students competing from Reedsport High left school at 8 a.m. and spent
the entire
day there. Lunch was provided and participants also received a T-shirt. Many students went, and for those who placed 3rd or better there will be an awards dinner. The dinner is on Thursday April, 22nd for the students, parents, and teachers at SOCC at 5:30 p.m.
