Mr. RHS
by Michele Kirk "It was a lot of hard work but it all paid off in the end," said Alison Law, a coordinator for Mr. RHS, when commenting about the pageant held at the Pacific Auditorium on Thursday April 7th, 2005 in order to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network (CMN). Twelve senior, male students spent three months raising money and getting prepared for
the Mr. RHS Pageant. As spectators entered the auditorium they
watched as pictures were displayed of the pageant participants, the
real excitement began at 7:00!Joe Zelinski of KDUN emceed for the night and welcomed the crowd while the boys prepared for their opening act, a dance to Footloose. Each contestant was then introduced and the sportswear segment began. Talent came next and was a favorite among the crowd with each participant portraying what they felt was a special skill. Before the 15 minute intermission a dash for cash segment was held where each contestant ran around the audience to collect as much cash as possible. Over $3,000 was raised from this alone. Formal Wear and Interviews were also favorites of the crowd as they listened to all of their creative and on-the-spot answers. As the pageant wrapped up Dawn Jastrem, the mother of Raychel Jastrem, a CMN patient, explained what CMN really meant and how important it really is. While Mrs. Jastrem was speaking Tina Fulps was busy tallying up votes. The judges were John Lechuga, Judy McClay, Amanda Gibson, Clarice Otis, and Delaine Humphrey's. Ten points was given to whoever had the most individual fund raising, five for faculty review, and ten for each winner of the Talent, Sportswear, Formal Wear, and Interview segments. Mr. Congeniality, voted on by each contestant, was given to Nick Schneider and People's Choice, which was new this year, had a four way tie with Nick Schneider, Daniel Mast, Nick Blundon, and Andrew Merschel. Although the scores were extremely close, Ryan Hitchcock was crowned as Mr. RHS. Ryan commented, "I wasn't expecting it at all." Approximately $9,700 was raised during this pageant alone. This number surpasses last year's total of approximately $4,600. FBLA State
by Heather LeachThe biggest goal for almost all FBLA members is to go to state. For twenty-nine Reedsport chapter members this goal was met. All work and no play is a common misconception of this club. While every member who went to state had to take at least one test and go
to one workshop, that is
about all the work the club members had to partake in. The
remainder
of the three day trip was spent shopping in the mall across the street
from the Red Lion Inn where they stayed, some of the boys spent time
playing basketball with a ball and hoop that they had purchased.Sunday, when the members arrived at the conference, they went to the opening session with Rich King as the keynote speaker. That night there was the annual dance where it was packed. The next day was a day of testing and relaxing. All of the tests that the members needed to take were taken this day and after their test and one workshop the students were granted a day of hanging out in Portland. Most students left the motel to shop for a while. Along with shopping another hot hang out spot was the hot tub. Tuesday the members stayed for the award ceremony where Alison Law was awarded second place in Business Communication. Brian Law placed fifth in Introduction to Business, and Andrew Merschel claimed ninth place in Marketing. Out of the three that placed only Alison can go on to the National competition in Florida. |
