The school to work members put in four hours at each store Safeway and Price n’ pride. “There was a great turnout as far as people giving us canned goods.” Says Michele Kirk an active member from school to work. There next project blessing canned good drive is being planned for the weekend before Christmas. If you would like to donate just stop at the local Safeway and Price n’ Pride. Blood Drive By Mandy Foote The
American Red Cross was sucking the blood out of high school students on
Monday the 21 of November. Actually, these participating high
school students willingly donated their blood to the Red Cross during
the 3rd annual blood drive at Reedsport High school.
A total of 55 students participated in the blood drive and 44 were able to give blood. Out of these, 22 students were first time donors. The goal was to accomplish 36 units of blood and this year they received a total of 39 units of usable blood. Bright and early Monday morning, Red Cross volunteers were scrambling around to prepare for the day. Some donors were anticipating the blood sucking moment, some were extremely nervous and others were really excited. Allen Wheeler said, It was a really good experience even though needles really freak me out.” All this blood will be given to local hospitals. During tragedies, like Katrina, hospitals blood supply is given to the areas needed. After big disasters blood is short in hospitals so this blood will help them stock back up. Even though many students were willing to donate their blood, not all students were accepted. First, students had to be at least 17 years old, or if they were 16 years old they had to have a permission slip. Students also had to be at least 110 pounds, they could not have had a piercing or a tattoo in the last 6 months. They also couldn’t have been in Africa or anywhere else where many deadly diseases were prone. Though there was many more requirements. After a lot of questions to make sure they were okay to give blood, they then were selected to test their blood for the iron level. If the number was too high or low they were not allowed to give blood for several different reasons. So far ASB has a goal to keep the Red Cross coming back once a year to give students a chance to have a comfortable environment for first time donors. They also hope to encourage a few life time donors from the students. Braves Bowling Challenge By Heather Parker November
26 rockn'' bowl at ten o’ clock there was a bowling competition
against all students under the age of 18. This competition had
students going up against one of the girls on the bowling team.
If the student won then he or she got a free pass to a night of rockn''
bowl shoes included. Because of such a late notice their were very few
people to show up to the challenge. They only had four people show up
so it was not a very good turn out. Out of the four people who
showed up two people managed to beat at least one girl on the team to
win a free pass to rockn'' bowl. To get your pass you had to go up and
talk to the coach of the bowling team which he then talk to you about
maybe joining the bowling team. If you missed this challenge and would
have like to participate but didn’t know their will be another
challenge held sometime in january so please if you would like to come
look out for flyers.
Community ServiceBy Heather Parker Calling
all dog lovers! If the Reedsport dog shelter was willing to give
community service for volunteers would anyone be up to it? The
dog shelter needs volunteers to help take care of the dogs they catch
running around or that have been abandoned. The shelters duties
are as follows: clean out their kennel
s feed the dogs and
make
sure they have fresh water and come to visit them. An optional duty for
anyone is let the dogs out one at a time for exercise in the
containment of shelter grounds. Because the dogs that are caught are only here for two weeks if there not adopted there may be one dog to four dogs there at one time. If you would like to help out but can not spare the time the shelter greatly appreciates donated dog food, so please if you can spare or have left overs send it to the shelter or contact the police department and 271-2100 and tell them you would like to donate food. If you decide to help out their is a meeting at the police station the first tuesday of every month or you could talk to Heather Parker. A rule the shelter holds up is anyone under aged must bring a parent to stay with you at all times that you are on the premises. Also if anyone is looking for a dog please go to the Police Station and talk to them about seeing a dog in the shelter to see if andy of them suit you Calling all volunteers please come down to help out these poor dogs. there only here for two weeks so again please if you can please help out as much as possible. |
