ASB Travels to Seaside

by Alison Law

A trip to Seaside for the Oregon Association of Student Councils (OASC) conference is a yearly tradition for Reedsport ASB.  Leaving Saturday afternoon, a total of 15 students attended the conference this year, including ten ASB officers and five students holding other leadership positions in clubs or classes.
After making several stops on a rainy drive up the coast, the group arrived at their rented house in Seaside.  The conference began the next morning with keynote speaker John Alston.  Candidates for OASC President, a student position, gave campaign speeches and over 1500 students around the state got the chance to check out vendors with new fundraising and event planning ideas.
Later that evening, students attended multiple sessions on such varied topics as putting together school sports highlight films and lobbying to get a student on the Oregon State Board of Education.
Reedsport leaders agreed that the sessions were interesting and worthwhile.
For a fun time after a long day of leadership activities, many attended a “Shine On” dance, where students dressed in their best metallic outfits.  It was not unusual to see students in sequined belts, glittery eyeshadow, or wrapped in tin foil.  A crushing crowd dancing to the latest songs while others sang karaoke or participated in a bath tub race.
Waking up after a long night of dancing and movies, Reedsport students cleaned up the house and loaded up the cramped bus.  They attended a last session with keynote speaker Sam Glenn, an accomplished chalk artist and motivational speaker.
Tired out from a long and educational weekend, the officers slept on the way home, but not before contemplating the new ideas they learned at the conference.  The ASB hopes to implement many of these ideas in the coming school year.

Starting Fresh

by Bebette Solorzano

Basketball, wrestling, and cheerleading are three sports that RHS is going to have this upcoming winter season.    Swimming is usually a regular sport however, this year things might have to change.
Mr. Gibbons the swimming coach is trying to keep swimming going but, if there are no students willing to participate there will not be a team.  On the November 7th, students at RHS, were asked if they would like to join the swim team. If you were not one of those students and you would like to participate please contact Mr. Fulps or Mr. Gibbons and let them know as soon as possible. A team is despreatly wanted but the highschool can't have a team with out athletes.
Try outs for 9-12 grade girls basketball was on Wednesday, November 9th at 5:30 in the high school gym. Try outs for 9-12 boys basketball was on November 7th at 3:30, also in the high school gym.
There was a cheerleading clinic on November 9th-10th.  The actual try outs for the upcoming basketball season were on friday November 11th. Congratulations to those who made the squad Cole Browning, Kyle Bent, Camille Tisler, Charity Scherer, Melissa Holt, and  Amber Qualls.
Wrestling starts on Monday, November 14th at 3:30 in the wrestling room upstairs.

Project Blessing

By Heather Parker

A group of students, on Halloween, instead of trick or treating for candy trick or treated for canned goods.  This team of students do their best to commit their time for community service.  They find little things that aren't recognized all the time and help out with those many deeds.  These students are part of a team called School-to-Work.
The School-to-Work group set up a meeting before Halloween.  At the meeting they split into groups and decided where each group was going to go trick or treat.  On halloween night the team met at a church near the school.  They then split up into their groups and got ready to head out. Once in their part of town they went door to door saying “ Trick or treat!  Hi, we are here to collect can goods for project blessing.”
All together twenty students participated with the canned food drive, even students that weren’t members participated for community service hours.  There was 5 to 6 groups and they were split up into parts of town such as Ranch Road, Ridway, Gardener, and two downtown groups. Though the final count of cans is not available each team brought in a full trunk of cans.  Students say they acomplished more this year than last year.
Their next idea is a can drive at Safeway and Price‘n Pride so if any students want to help out for community service they are welcomed to help.
