Religious Conflict
by Mandy Foote
Where is
the boundary between religion and school? Some say students and
teachers shouldn’t even mention God in any way, others say students
should abide by the 10 commandments. Both points are extreme
opinions and should be looked at in each others point of view to find a
neutral agreement.
Isn’t there some kind of right Americans have that
says we have the freedom of speech? Wouldn’t that include the
simple freedom of speaking about your religion at school? Every person
should be able to speak about anything they want, assuming it is
appropriate, including religion and God. I know that when I go to
school I have some friends that are Christians, like me, and I enjoy
talking about God and other religious subjects. Luckily Reedsport
has never been too strict about what kids or staff members talk
about. At other schools I have heard about students getting in
trouble for religious related things, which I think is wrong.
In the same sense there are people who abuse the
freedom. There are people who would force their religion on to
others, and some kids even would start a fight about it.
That goes against our freedoms just as much as not being able to speak
about it.
There are even some people who believe we should go
back in using the 10 commandments in the school. But that is just
as bad as forcing a religion. Just because one person is
religious does not mean the rest of the people want to follow those
same rules and be involved in the religion.
Somewhere, and somehow we need to find a
balance. I personally think students should be able to talk and
discuses religion openly. Religion is part of history, there is
so
much to learn from other religions. That doesn’t apply people
forcing a religion but discussing and learning about it. I even
think there should be classes available, as an elective, that
students can go and learn more and partake in their religion
more. though, this is something that probably only larger and more
financially stabled schools could participate in.
I think there are too many people who don’t want to
find an agreement and just live by their own rules, this leaves too
many of us butting heads, which doesn’t lead us anywhere
positive. If we work to compromising and understanding each
others views on the subject I think there is a simple answer to the
problem.
Rockin' RCLC
By Jill Ellis
Seventh and eighth graders, listen up. Do you have nowhere to go
after school? Do you have trouble with your homework? Well,
now you have a place that you can go to get help with your school work
and somewhere to hang out after school, RCLC is the place to go.
At RCLC you get a chance to get a snack, hang out with friends, and do
your homework at one place. You can to stay there until your parents
can get off work so that you don't have to walk home if you live down
town.
The first thing you do is get a snack from the
cafeteria such as pretzels, apples, and a carton of chocolate or
regular milk. Then you go do your homework, if you have any, for about
an hour. Then you have free time till 5:30 when your parents come pick
you up.
They have RCLC from Monday to Thursday, some
times friday. If they do have RCLC on Friday then they show a movie
instead. Also if your parents cant come pick you up there are
buses that you can ride.
I think that RCLC is a great place for any
kids to go and just hang out. There are a lot of activities and
fun things to do . It is a good place to send time and stay
out of trouble.
