Braves Struggle
against the Tigers
by Justin Gannon
“We’re only as
good as our seniors,” said Head Coach Lynn Fulps, before the
first
game of the season. This proved to be one of the theme quotes for
Reedsport’s varsity football team, and to the seniors, this came took
on a whole new meaning. It meant a possible playoff birth, a winning
season, and even more important...one final taste of victory for the
guys that aren’t going to be back next year.
At about
6:45 pm on friday the 28th, announcer Keith
Tymchuk began the senior
introductions. Each senior gave their
mother a rose and posed a picture with their parents. Just after the
introductions everyone in the stands and on the field recited the
Pledge of Allegiance, and then promptly at 7 pm was the opening
kickoff.
The Braves received the ball and got it down
around the 30 yard line, but the Bandon defense stopped them short and
forced them to punt a few short plays later. The Tigers showed
their overbearing strength to run the ball and scored in four plays,
but their extra point was unsuccessful. With around 8 minutes left in
the first quarter the Braves once again received the ball, but this
time were successful in scoring but Justin Gannon’s kick was tipped and
bounced off the bottom crossbar so the attempt was failed.
By half time the Braves had scored once more after a
trick pass from Spencer Mitchell to Daniel Plotz landed them on the 1
yard-line. Spencer Mitchell dove into the end zone for six, but Justin
Fulps was sacked for a loss on the two point conversion. The Tigers
also went into half-time with two touchdowns. Half-time score was
Bandon 13, Reedsport 12.
After the half, the Braves came out energized and
ready to play, but Bandon continued to shut down their offense, and
bull over their defense. By the end of the game, Reedsport Braves were
still unable to score and were defeated by the Bandon Tigers 26-12.
