"Home of the Braves"

One Cent at a Time

by Delina Whidden
Three large water containers sit inside the junior high library. There are three titles on these containers. seventh grade, eighth grade, and Praters Taters. (This is for people on Student Council)
Reedsport is participating in a penny drive to raise   money for Hurricane Katrina, the victims whose homes were destroyed. Reedsport hopes to put a dent in the cost for damage.
Only pennies are accepted into the containers. If there is silver or paper money inserted into the tub, there is a twist. For example: if a one dollar bill is in the tub, there must be 100 pennies  to cancel out the one dollar. Same with dimes, nickels, and quarters.  Then the money is counted from there, because it is not only a fundraiser, but a contest against the
seventh and eighth graders.
Mrs. Prater put a couple dollars into each of the tubs to get them started, and a few eighth graders put nickels and dimes in the seventh grade tub daily. Although it may look like the tubs are equal, it seems as though Prater's Taters had taken on a lead, Mrs. Prater puts pennies in daily.
The seventh grade tub has a couple of dollars, same with the eighth grade so it will be a close call with the winners.
Reedsport will continue doing fund-raisers, like the chocolate bars, mints, and soon caramel apples. This penny drive ends on Friday, and the winners are sure to get the glory and fame.

 1980's Dance

by Amanda Palmer
Dancing the night away or for this dance it would be head banging the night away.
The dance took place on Friday the 21st of October.  Josh Palmer, Adam Chase, Steven Stemmerman, and Dillon Chudy thought it would be fun to make the dance a retro 80s dance, so the boys put the music together with the help of some other students.
On friday at lunch, some periods, and after school certain students who were on the dance comity were rushing around setting things up for the dance. They used some of the  decorations form the Homecoming dance this year and they rest they made.
At lunch students Amanda Palmer, Stephanie Clardy, and Janelle Batey had an idea of putting blue paper on the walls with students' handed prints in yellow paint all over the paper. So at lunch they put their plan into action.
After school the decorating team hung up the paper but there wasn't enough to cover all of the walls so on some of the walls there was blue paper with leaves on them.
Ruth Prater the librarian drew a backdrop for the homecoming dance and the junior high students used that for the backdrop for pictures too.
The animation was $3.00. There was pizza, and snow comes for sell.
Prizes were given out for a break dancing contest. harold Hinds got first place and J.C. Dollerhide got second.
There was also a game that each students played with a partner. One person goes to one end of the room and their partner went to the other and they had to try to shoot that person with a pump rocket.
"The dance was fun but it would've been better if more people were there and if we actually knew how to dance to the music," said student Tianna Butler.

Eighth Grade Volleyball Invitational

by Amanda Palmer

With balls flying all over the room teams were warming up for the games ahead.
The Coos Bay Lions Club Tournament started on Friday the 14th and ended on Saturday the 15th of October.
All together there were 39 teams at the tournament. The games were played at Marshfield High School, Sunset Middle School, and the Boys and Girls Club.
On the first day two games to 20 points were played to see which bracket your team would be in. Everyone played at least three complete games in the first day.
The three teams that Reedsport played were Monitor Eagles form Mt. Angel who the Braves girls lost against, Blanco Eagles for Port Orford which the Braves tied that game, and Jo Lane White form Roseburg which Reedspot lost, but only by a couple of points.
With that the girls were put into the 1A bracket for the next day. The second day was the real competition with in the bracket that Reedsport Braves played in there were nine teams.
The game that was played for third and fourth that the girls played was against Sunset Blue J.V. In one of the games Amanda Palmer served 12 balls in a row with leaving the sore 12 to 0. And after that there was only 3 or 4 other girls who served and then the game was over. Thanks to the servers the Braves won.
The eighth grade Reedsport Braves volleyball team got third place at the end of the day. They took home a new trophy to display in the junior high trophy case.

Cheering Them On!

by Amanda Palmer

"Go Braves!" Shouted Stephanie Clardy, Janelle Batey, Kayla Monroe, and Amanda Palmer at the eighth grade football game on Tuesday the 2th of September.
Janelle, Amanda, and Stephanie were dressed form head to toe in red, black, and white, and were standing with Kayla at the edge of the track cheering on the boys.
The eighth grade boys ended up winning the game, so they thought they should cheer the eighth grade volleyball players on.
On Monday the 26th of September there was no school, but the seventh and eighth grade football team was out on the field practicing at 3:30.
After the football players were done with practice at about 5:00 some of the players and Duncan Las went to the game and yelled their hearts out for the girls. The eighth grade volleyball team ended up winning all three games they played.
Some of the girls said, "It helped having the boys there it made us feel that our team was important."
Mrs. Prater announced the winners over the intercom a couple of days later, and the next day Mrs. Prater the librarian at Reedsport junior/ senior high school had cheese sticks and pepperoni pizza for the kids.
The students that won rowdy rooter were eighth graders Amanda Palmer, Stephanie Clardy, Kayla Monroe, Duncan Law, Alex Re, Tyler Olsson, and seventh grader Brenden Gibbens.
The next home football game will be on Tuesday the 25th of October. The seventh grade game starts at 4:00, with the eighth grade following.
The next and last home volleyball game will be on Thursday the 13th of October. and just like junior high football the seventh grade plays first at 4:00, and eighth graders play after them.
Hope to see everyone at the games cheering the players on!

Young but Large

by Amanda Palmer
Everyone has a chance to guess this pumpkin weight and win money. If someone guesses the correct weight then they will earn 50% of the money. All they have to do is pay $.50 and take a guess of how much the pumpkin weighs and if they are right the get 50% of the profit made.
To inter in the contest go to the junior high library and give money to Mrs. Prater and tell her how much you think the pumpkin weighs.  Mrs. Prater will announce the winner in a few weeks.
The money that is made from this fund-raiser will go towards feild trips so any one willing to pay 50 cents please help out the students.

Pop-Up Books

by Amanda Palmer
Starting last week on Tuesday the 18th of October while half for the junior high students were TESA testing the other half of Mrs. Gunn's movies, fantasy, and pop culture class went to the library and made a pop-up page for a book that they would later be putting together.
The books had to be based on either Mary Poppins, Dumbo, or Stuart Little, which are some movies that the class lately watched.
On Thursday when the other half of the students were testing the other students went to the library and did the same thing.
The next week on Wednesday the 26th of October the class went back to the library and started making the cover and actually started putting their book together.
Mrs. Prater had to spend a lot of her time working on putting a packet of things that students would need to make their cover and would need to put the book together.
Supplies that the students needed were: wallpaper, cardboard, constriction paper, scissors, glue, and tape. All cut the right size and everything.

Congratulations

The Reedsport 8th grade volleyball team met at Oregon Grinders at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday the 26th.
The reason for this gathering was because Coach Diana Gunn gave out ribbons to every player. Every ribbon said something different on it for what each player's characteristics stood out during the season.  Coach Gunn said, "It matched their personality and how well they played in games."
The girls ate some pizza and talked about percentage of serves each person got over the net and was in.
Cindy Steel had the highest percentage which was 23/27 which is 85%. In this season Tianna Butler served 146 balls during games. The teams over all percentage was 491/738 which is 67%.  After that ended the girls walked over the the high school cafeteria for the junior high sports recognition.
The seventh and eighth graders who participated in eather football or volleyball were supposed to be there along with their coaches.
Secenth grade football went first after Mr. Fulps said a few words. As coach McCray called names and not even 1/2 of the team was there.
Once the players joined their coach, he handed each one of them a cirtificate.
After the seventh grade it was eighth grade football who went up to the frount of the room. The coaches did the same and handed cirtificats out, but this time alomst all of the players were there except for three.
The girls were next. The seventh grade volleyball team gt cortificats and LaRee Thornton said some nice words about each layer and they sat back down.
As coach Gunn walked up to the frount her team followed. Mr. Gunn handed cirtificats out, and had some additional cirtificats.
Ranee Roche` was voted MVP. Tia Howell got a most improved cirtificate, and Sandra Ashley- Large got awarded mos team spirited.
