Finally Lockers for
Junior High
by Heather Parker
What took so long?
Two years went by and the junior high had no lockers.
The lockers that were rightfully theirs were given to the high school side during the move or boarded up by a new
wall. The consequences were kids were getting stuck with cubbies
again.
Finally, though, this year brought a change for the junior high
students. Bright red lockers now shine from the sides of their
hallway.
Two
years ago, kids were given cubbies instead of lockers. Students were
having
problems when other kids would steal their school books and had to pay
for something they couldn't help from happening. There was no way to
lock up or keep their books from being stolen.
Last year there was still no change with getting lockers. At the time,
the school did not realize it had made a mistake by putting all
the cubbies into one room. More things were stolen and more fights
happened. The cubbie room was where most of the fights broke out
because there were no teachers and all the students were all packed
into one room.
Another complaint was that kids were carrying around all their huge
books all day. Parents were spending extra money on backpacks because
their child's were tearing under all the weight of their books.
Why
was it that when the junior high first showed up at the high school
their lockers were given to the high school students? The way I see
it, they should have applied for the grant sooner. In my
opinion they should have taken their original lockers and given them
back. There are very few high school kids who use them; some
of them are just gathering dust. At least in the junior high hall
all of them would have been used
Over the years they decided cubbies just didn't work. All last
year students, teachers and parents did fundraiser after fundraiser to
gather enough money to get new lockers. I guess what they say is true,
“Third times the charm” or in this case, third year's the charm.
