Braves Begin Seasons at Home

by Alison Law
Football
The Braves faced the number one ranked Dayton Pirates in their first home game of the year Friday night.  Dayton claimed a clear victory with a final score of 6-47.
Although Dayton lacked any passing completions, quarterback TJ Johnson had 129 rushing yards.   Dayton had a total of 440 rushing yards, while Reedsport only managed 56, led by senior Eric Chase with 28 yards.
Despite frequent pressure in the backfield, Reedsport quarterback Justin Fulps was 8 for 11, for a total of 131 passing yards.
Reedsport’s only touchdown of the night was a 68 yard pass from Fulps to senior Chris Kaufmann.  Kaufmann had four catches for 97 yards during the game.
Dayton gave up 55 yards in penalties, including one for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Volleyball
After a close loss to Gold Beach on Thursday night, the Braves two wins and two losses in their Dune Classic Tournament.
Beating Yoncalla and Glide in the morning, the girls lost to North Douglas and Siuslaw in the afternoon.
Against Siuslaw, the Braves lost in two games, 25-8 and 25-15. Siuslaw prevailed against North Douglas for the championship.
Along with two girls from North Douglas and two from Siuslaw, senior outside hitter Deanne Huebner made the all-star team.

Cross Country
In the 32nd year of the Road, Lake, and Dune Invitational, Reedsport’s only home cross country race, several new runners finished strong.  On the JV side, Mike Christofferson finished first with a time of 24:12, after only 3 days of practice. Just behind him in third was sophomore Eli Garner, 24:35.        Newcomer girls Katie Corcoran and Clarissa Rickels placed 4th and 5th, with times of 35:44 and 40:38.  Another new member of the team, Brandi Cramm, ran in the open category.
Chase Landrey, the Braves’ sole returning boys runner, had a time of 26:14, two minutes faster than the previous year.  The most experienced runner of the team, senior Kati Dickson placed eighth with a time of 24:21.
Dickson said, “I felt I did well.  I kept up with the girls from Siuslaw, who were much faster than me at Steen’s [running camp].” The only other senior, Aubrey Vaughn, finished13th for a time of 30:14, a PR of about a minute.
According to Dickson, the Road, Lake, and Dune is a slow and tough race for all runners.  It begins with an uphill run to the Umpqua Lighthouse, goes around Lake Marie, changes terrain  for about a half mile out on the dunes, and finishes back at the starting line. Last year’s state champion, Hollie Dieu of Coquille, broke the course record of 21:30 with a time of 20:49.
Teams in attendance were Coquille, Jefferson, Reedsport, Siuslaw, and South Umpqua.

The Kindness Crew In Action

by Bethany Elliott
This year students are putting together a group called the Kindness Crew. The Kindness Crew is made up of advisor Heather Vail, committee chairs Chris Kaufmann and  Ashley Fulps, and the ASB. They were inspired to do this by a Canadian Kindness Crew that came to RHS for an assembly. The ASB is doing this to build kindness, service, and spirit in the school.
On the first day of Hello Week they handed out cookies and messages that said, "smile--it's beautiful,"  "looking good,"  and "have a great day."
Through  random acts  of kindness, such as this, they plan on making a difference in the school and the community. They kicked off the  year by  handing out cookies and messages because they want to make people aware of the Kindness Crew and inspire an awesome crew to get started.

Seventh Graders Come to High School

by Emily Thornton
The seventh graders say they are excited to be in the high school and a few of the seventh graders were asked how they felt about  being in RHS and many of the seventh graders including  Merrissa Savage, commented on our school lunches ,”we have a  very good variety and it tastes better.”
Carlos Flores was asked, “what was better about the school?” All he could say was that, “ We get alot more food this year then we did last year at Highland.”
Marisela Thorn ton was asked what she liked about the high school and she said,” The High School has alot more space and there was a very good chance your friends were in every class as you”.  Alot of the students were asked what they did’nt like about the high school and they said ,” Carrying all the binders and books around it really hurts and we can’t wait to get lockers!” The seventh graders are really excited to be in high school now and enjoy everything about the high school.
