Shoveling your face

By Delina Whidden

The Reedsport High school Winter pep assembly is being held on Friday, January 20th at 2:45 in the gym. The familiar sounds of yelling and clapping will be coming from the walls of the gym. Expect to see a dance from the cheerleaders, and the pep band to play. As this assembly is being held to honor winter sports, the basketball players, wrestling team, and cheerleaders will be introduced. January is also “Pie eating month," so Their was of course The twinkie eating contest. This contest was for basketball cheerleading and wrestling teams. The contest was were some body stood behind some one else and with out looking they tried to feed the person in front of them a twinkie. That puts a whole new meaning to shoveling your face. Freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior class will have a chance to yell their hearts out with our famous “Braves beat the wildcats” chant. The seniors taking it like normal  had the booming cheer out of all while the juniors didn't cheer at all!
Athletes of  the Month
By Jill Ellis

Every month there is an award given out to students here at Reedsport jr. sr high school for their athletic ability to do their best. This months went out to two seinors non other than Heather Leach , captain of the cheerleading team and Skyler Squglio, who plays guard for the varsity basketball team. Heather was awarded because she always tries her best no matter what, she has the best attitude and always stays on track. Skyler is always there early for practice and is always last to leave, just like Heather, he always dose his best. They were awarded at the last  Braves Booster club meeting.

FBLA
By Alison Law

With a record membership of 52 students, the Reedsport Chapter of FBLA is gearing up for a successful district competition. Held at Umpqua Community College, the event is organized by Rogue Umpqua Region Vice President Shaley Shafer and her home chapter.  It is scheduled for January 28th  and will be a busy few days for FBLA members, as the weekend  will also include two home basketball games and a speech contest.
The officers have been busy organizing their new and returning members into highly trained business-minded, test-taking machines.  Tests are both written and practical. Reedsport members will be competing in both.
Written tests are on many different areas of business, from communication to math to economics. Freshman and sophomores have the opportunity to take introductory tests where they only compete against other underclassmen. Experienced upperclassmen can take more advanced tests covering the same material or try something totally new, like Business Law.
Other tests are involve computers or public speaking. One event, FBLA Creed, is for underclassmen and only involves memorizing and reciting FBLA’s official creed. Other public speaking tests are more complicated.  Public Speaking II, for upperclassmen, requires that the member prepares a five minute speech to present to the judges.  Computer based events include Computer Applications and Word Processing, where competitors demonstrate their proficiency in Word and Excel programs or their typing skills.
Chapter treasurer Josh Savey has participated in the district competition since his freshman year. “I like FBLA because its generally relaxing, its fun, you get to meet interesting people, and the FBLA techno music!!,” said Josh.

Bowling  Tournament
By Heather Parker

Earl Anthony bowler of the century who died not to long ago was honored with a tournament.
Earl Anthony Pro Am tournament was held at Medford’s Lava Lanes. There many teams from all around North Bend, Siuslaw, Springfeild and more.
For this tournament  there were two flights. The morning flight starting at 7:00 am  was for team competition. For the team set up teams had to play baker style. Baker style is whe five bowlers on a team and they are in what is called a line up which is an order the team mates go in. So if we had five team mates and they were in order one through five. they would bowl in that order for the frames in a game. For this competition the teams only brought four players and one out of the many pro bowlers there would fill in for the fifth bowler. Then there was the afternoon flight for individual competion.  This flight the bowlers bowled their own game were seven student bowlers bowled on a set of lanes. Then Pro bowlers would go through all the lanes helping and teaching other bowlers.
The Individual bowlers played nine pin no-tap. Nine pin no-tap is where if you knock down nine pins then the computer reads it as a strik! Now to win individual you had to have the highest series. The highest series is when all the points from every game is added up into one number.
The winner of the individual competition is one of our own here at Reesport Jr/Sr. High. Jesseca Parker won a $100 scholarship. Cassey vos who also goes to this school placed second. For the team competion this writer was not able to get the results for the team competition. Sorry! Congratulations Jessica!
