Lets go for a Swim
By Ariel Castle

Downtown Reedsport experienced flooding during the New Year holiday weekend due to winter storms. The Umpqua River and local creeks flooded because of the high level of water due to storm runoff. Reedsport volunteer firefighters were kept busy, as were other local authorities, responding to the flood.
The city ordered the floodgates installed in the dikes to hold back the high water from the overflowing banks of the Umpqua River. Many local businesses filled with water during the storms. Some of the businesses, such as Fred Wahl Marine Construction, had water up to two feet deep inside.
Napa Auto Parts and Hair 101 also experienced flooding, and several downtown businesses used sandbags to try to keep the water out. At high tide, part of Highway 101 directly in front of the Best Western was inaccessible to traffic, and some roads in town were closed.
Highway 38 and Highway 101 North were closed most of the weekend. It has been many years since Reedsport has experienced such high water levels.
1996 was the last year the water levels were high enough to cause extensive flooding, and this last weekend the water levels were higher. As of today, water levels have receded, although the rivers are still high.

Shortage of Days
By Jill Ellis

With the news of four school days being cut some students are probably wondering what's going on and how will it effect everything? So we went to Mr. Fulps and asked him a few questions to find out what's happening and how he feels about the days being cut. “One of the days should have been used for January second because of all the football games that were going on” comments Mr. Fulps.
Since most people didn't actually come to school one because it was a national holiday and because of the football games going on not many classes got a lot of things accomplished.
Some people felt that because all most everyone that works got the day off that we should have too, Jon Stanley commented, he also said “I stayed home because it was a national holiday and I did not feel like coming.”
With graduation coming up some of the Seniors might be wondering if it will effect graduation but Mr. Fulps says “Never, every thing should go as planed.” “The reason the days are being cut is because of money shortage,” Mr. Fulps also comments. This has only happened once before, last year. Mr. Fulps also says that it might happen again.
